Celebrating the Holidays in the DMV

The holidays are truly the most wonderful time of the year! The DC area tends to have mild winters but we do occasionally get some snow which adds an extra special dose of magic. For Ballston residents, there are numerous ways to celebrate the season. From LED light displays to concerts to outdoor activities, many organizations host events throughout the month of December and into the new year.

Waycroft residents have the advantage of a nearby metro stop to head into downtown DC for tree lighting ceremonies and festive city fun! Here are a few can’t-miss events this holiday season!

White House Christmas Tree Lighting

The annual Christmas tree lighting is a major event in downtown DC, just across the bridge from Virginia. Though traffic can get gnarly, those who want to catch the show can use metro or VRE to head into the city. This year, the event will take place on December 5th and performers include the US Marine Corps band, Colton Dixon, and Jessie James Decker. If you’re unable to attend the 97th Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, but you’d still like to see the stunning 30-foot tree, you can view it after dark anytime during the month of December.

Ballston Quarter Holiday Kick Off

For holiday fun a bit closer to home, Ballston Quarter is offering all day activities for the whole family on December 7th from 11 am until 6 pm. From the Polar Express Pajama Party at Regal Cinemas to the Hot Chocolate Bar at District Doughnut, there’s an activity for everyone to enjoy. Stop by later in the day for a holiday concert in front of the Ballston Quarter Christmas tree.

Complimentary Caroling at The Willard

For those who work downtown, or don’t mind venturing into the District, The Willard Hotel offers free holiday caroling performances during December. From the 1st through the 23rd, stop by the lobby between 5:30 and 7:30 pm for a festive event. Now in its 17th year, holiday caroling at The Willard has become a joyful tradition for locals and tourists alike!

If you’re looking for a way to ring in the holidays, Northern Virginia has plenty of great options. The Meadowlark Botanical Gardens light show is a family favorite every year. For those looking for a sweaty way to celebrate, the Pacers Jingle All the Way 5K should do the trick! You can also check out Eventbrite and Facebook events for more ideas in your neighborhood.

From all of us at The Waycroft apartments in Ballston, we wish you a very happy holidays and a safe and happy New Year!
