Ski at Wintergreen

If you prefer a more active escape, hit the slopes! Wintergreen Ski Resort is about 2.5 hours from the DC area. All level skiers can enjoy this mountain with more than 26 slopes and trails. Check the mountain cam ahead of time to make sure there’s snow, but once you’re there you can get a lift ticket and ski (or snowboard rentals) on site. Hike at Bears Den

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy the outdoors but you’re not a skier, Bears Den is an easy drive from Ballston. Nestled along the Appalachian Trail, this rocky overlook is less than an hour’s drive from The Waycroft. Pack a picnic, plenty of water, and maybe a hot cocoa to share, and hike along the AT from the trailhead until your legs feel pleasantly tired. Take in the views from Bears Den and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way!
